New Year’s Resolutions: Our Top 5 for 2014

The beginning of each new year, for thousands of years, has brought with it the opportunity to proclaim our desire for change. A chance to start anew and make decisions that will (we hope) make us better people. The sad fact is that many of these decisions fizzle out within weeks, leaving us with a sense of failure that does not have to be deserved. We’ve put together a short list of some of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions along with our suggestions for making them work.

1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends

We all know the pressures of work, long commutes and other responsibilities can make a decision to spend more time with loved ones difficult to sustain. Invite your neighbors and friends over for a movie or games. 2. Fit in Fitness

However, finding a routine that you can stick to seems the biggest challenge. Regular exercise has more impact on long term health benefits than anything else.  In addition to reducing the risks for some cancer, exercise increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, reduces blood pressure and even helps to alleviate arthritis. So, how do we incorporate some activities into our lives that will keep us healthier, and make us look and feel better? Create a workout space in your home. Incorporate strength and stretching exercises in a space convenient to you. If you are building your home, think about using that flex room as your own personal gym.

Incorporate more walking. Our new home communities usually include many walking paths and outdoor areas that make walking in the neighborhood simple and enjoyable. Think about gathering your new neighbors for a walking club!

Find a local dance, yoga or fitness class. Pick something you think you would enjoy – find a friend to join in and then get busy!

3. Enjoy Life More

Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of Americans, it is no wonder that “enjoying life more” has become a popular resolution in recent years. Or just get out and try something new! Take up a new hobby or try your hand at skiing. Go to a theater performance, or head to the local spa. 5. Help Others

A popular and worthwhile New Year’s Resolution, volunteerism can take a variety of forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local no-kill shelter, mentoring a child, or providing entertainment at a local retirement home, opportunities to share of your time and talent abound. The volunteer organization VOICES connects volunteers with projects to fit practically any schedule. Similarly, United Way of Wise County is a great place to get started if you live or are planning on moving to our Decatur community.

Even if your time is in short supply, you can commit to helping others through donating furniture, clothing and other household items that you no longer need. Helping others takes many forms and is the one resolution that keeps on giving — to yourself and to others.
